Innovation Education Creating Opportunity
Our SMART program builds small local schools in developing regions around the world. Our Students do Media, Art and Research projects, solo and in Teams. Each campus is a small experimental farm with a bistro-café. Earnings from the café support programs, uniforms and family groceries for local students. Local students pay zero tuition and while learning in a healthy, stimulating, biophilic environment. We create opportunity for those that have little or none.
Our biourban campuses directly provide food security for staff, students, families and the surrounding community. The café menu is based on a campus meal plan that offers delicious, nutritious fare to staff and local students for free. Integrated revenue streams also make each campus more self-reliant. Regular operations serve as practicum and research opportunities for students. Our local first policies prioritize local economic development – the majority of on-site profit stays in the local community.
Teaching Practical Innovation
The curriculum is a focused subset of the well known STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Maths) framework. SMART encourages structured creativity, design thinking, systems thinking and project management skills all with an eye towards encouraging generations of innovators. The program is project based rather than being divided into courses because we leave students with a portfolio of achievements to show. The general project cycle is generally described in the acronym:
- Student… solo projects create something that meets goals and objectives. Achievement, productivity and creativity are embodied in every student activity.
- Media… is produced at every stage to document, as art and as online content for you.
- Art… is key to communication, expression and inspiring others to problem solve.
- Research… is the scientific method, incremental innovation and organized problem solving we can teach.
- Teams… can achieve more than the sum of individual efforts and offer vital experience to students.
Our online curriculum is a narrower subset again, MARS (Media, Art, Research, Stories), that adds science fiction and futurism to the mix in the form ‘stories’. Exploring what could happen through realistic fiction is a path to innovation that SRG can share with everyone.
