Mechatronic Projects

Mechatronics, also called mechatronics engineering is an interdisciplinary branch of engineering that focuses on the engineering of electronic, electrical and mechanical engineering systems. This also includes a combination of robotics, electronics, computer, telecommunications, systems, control, and product engineering. This is one of the most advanced fields our core curriculum will cover and it has numerous applications in space and on Earth. On campus small robots will operate in our laboratory clean chambers and as part of our micro-observatory. We actively develop miniature greenhouses which require cost effective automation – robots that can service small sealed environments.

The name is a portmanteau of mechanics and electronics; however, as the complexity of technical systems continued to evolve, the definition had been broadened to include more technical areas. As technology advances over time, subfields of engineering adapt and multiply. The intention of mechatronics is to produce a design solution that unifies various subfields into solutions. Design and systems thinking are key components of innovation education so this is a good fit – there is artistry in creating these complex systems. We also strive to develop appropriate technology, so our machines will be durable, fully repairable and modular where possible. These projects prepare students for a wide variety of industries while giving them dramatic achievements for their portfolios.

Open Source Farm Equipment: On established campuses we design, build and promote farm machinery that can be constructed and repaired without intellectual property barriers or locked component supply chains. It is likely that we will build upon the Global Village Construction Set (GVSC).
