MARS Space Service

Welcome to the MSS Headquarters. This is the volunteer arm of our space program and where we have some futurism fun!

We need your support! Click here to join the Champions’ Club.

As our mandate is innovation education, our premier online learning program MARS focuses on human space exploration and food science. MARS is our overall project cycle, describing what we do, and stands for:

  • Media – We produce media to inspire learning & innovation.
  • Art – We encourage creativity through design, architecture & more.
  • Research – We do citizen science, academic literature review & more.
  • Stories – We fuel the imagination & teach communication with sci-fi & futurism.

Why space settlement and food science? These two topics are intimately tied to each other and advances in one will seed developments in the other. We study closed cycle systems, from supporting astronauts to practical agriculture. Click to know more.

Future History: The purpose of being a “Space Service”, essentially a Martian merchant marine, is that we imagine ourselves in some realistic possible future looking back on events as if they were historical. This allows us to explore the future, our place in it, how it might come to pass. It also reminds us that we shouldn’t take everything so seriously. Fiction is fun and we should not forget how to dream.

Gifts for Humanity: The MSS is a volunteer program with all learning materials published open source (CC-BY-SA), free for anyone. Published materials will also include all the appropriate technology we develop on experimental farm campuses. This work also forms a foundation for student academic research. One of our early ongoing efforts is the Space Explorer Advocacy Toolkit (SEAT).

To the moon, Mars and the stars!

The Sergeants of SMART: Since the early days of the group, we have been SRG. It didn’t occur to any of us that more than a few people would assume this was short-form for the rank sergeant. So we went with it and the MARS Space Service was born. We can all be troops in the effort to build a better world through innovation. However, the emphasis for SRG is on being constructive. Regardless of who you are, you are welcome here. If you are interested in finding creative solutions to the problems we all face – we need your help. If you can’t support us as a Champion, please volunteer.
