Biourban Transformation
Modern cities are habitats for human beings that currently do not keep humans healthy. When the basics like shelter, HVAC, medical care and clean water are equal, city people are less mentally and physically healthy than those in the country side. Biourbanism is a scientific movement that aims to solve this problem. Our vision of small farm schools on the outskirts of every city and modular biome systems that improve nutrition for urbanites is part of the solution. There are a few essential elements that must come together in our model:
- Biourban Agriculture (green spaces growing food in cities)
- Closed Loop Systems (locally self-reliant value chains)
- Food System Vertical Integration (farm to table, shelf stable)
- Sustainable Perspective (profit motive balanced with resilience)
- Other Revenue Streams (integrated financial stability)
Farms with systems like the ones we develop do not have to be schools. Many other business, light industrial and residential properties could be similarly engineered as human habitats aligned with our biology and psychology. Integrating other site functions with high yield urban and peri-urban farms also provides local food security while creating beautiful, vibrant green spaces.
A Walk to the Park: Most people love going to the park for a breath of fresh air. Imagine if our city parks regularly produced tons of delicious, nutritious food. If you have never tasted fresh picked produce please seek it out. We don’t refer to the bland, nutrient deficient fruits and vegetables engineered to sit for months in shipping containers and on store shelves. The food from your local biourban site will taste better, be better for you and it does not need a massive supply chain. Fruit from the park isn’t travelling thousands of kilometers… it is just a walk to the park away. No giant cargo ships, far less fuel, energy and money wasted in distribution. This can be part of your legacy if we work together.
Nature at Home: Human beings are all biophilic, our minds and bodies respond positively to the natural environments that supported us before we invented city living. Modern urban living is great in many ways, from pleasant indoor temperature and drinking relatively clean water to not worrying about wild animals that would try to eat us. However, mounting research clearly indicates that we suffer when our connection to nature is completely broken. Many of our campus systems are suitable for use at home. For every farm scale design we will research a small scale DIY system that you can use to bring the best – most delicious – parts of nature into your home.
Money Money Money: A biourban approach to food security also means it can be even less expensive than those tasteless supermarket products because you pay for those distribution costs in the price. What makes our current mega-industrial food system cost competitive is massive scale and frequent abuse of land and people. We envision efficient vertically integrated sites that can compete on price because they do more than just sell commodity fruits and vegetables.
The local biourban park you like to visit on your walk would have a small café or bistro with fresh fruits, vegetables and shelf-stable products made on site. Staff would harvest produce from the park as it would be visible but out of reach for visitors. A local bakery could partner with this small shop if they don’t have enough facilities or staff. Biomass from the park operation could be used to cultivate mushrooms on site or locally. The shop would also stock some convenience items and offer Wi-Fi too. You aren’t paying for most shipping, warehousing or a giant supermarket storefront – so the price is reasonable. You would also be paying the urban farmers and staff that live in your area. This keeps your money circulating inside your own local economy. The economics work in your favor.
